Jacksonville Is Where I Found Home

Jacksonville is more than the city where I live. It is my hometown—not because I was born here, but because this is where I finally found home.

When I arrived in Jacksonville in 2015, I was still carrying the weight of more than two decades of military service. I had spent years learning how to survive, accomplish the mission, protect others, and keep moving forward. What I had not yet learned was how to slow down, receive love, reconnect with myself, and fully live again.

Jacksonville became the place where that transformation began.

It is where I found love with my wife, Christy. Through our relationship, I began to understand that strength is not only demonstrated through endurance or sacrifice. Strength can also be found in honesty, vulnerability, patience, forgiveness, and allowing another person to truly know you.

It is where I found a deeper love for my family. I learned that coming home physically is not the same as becoming emotionally present. Family relationships require attention, communication, humility, and the willingness to grow.

Jacksonville is also where I rediscovered love for myself. I began separating who I truly was from the armor I had learned to wear. The qualities that helped me survive and serve still mattered, but I needed to understand when to use them—and when it was safe to put them down.

As I healed, I became more connected to the community around me. I met veterans, military families, business owners, nonprofit leaders, volunteers, and everyday citizens who cared deeply about this city. I realized that I still had something meaningful to contribute. My military service had ended, but my opportunity to serve had not.

That realization helped give birth to Warrior to Love®.

Warrior to Love addresses the human side of coming home. While other organizations provide essential support through healthcare, employment, housing, education, and benefits, WTL focuses on identity, relationships, belonging, purpose, and reconnection with community.

Our pathway is:

HEAL → CONNECT → SERVE → LEAD

We help veterans and their families heal within themselves, reconnect with one another, serve alongside their neighbors, and transform their lived experiences into healthy community leadership.

WTL is also an invitation to Jacksonville.

If we want Jacksonville to be recognized as the most military-friendly city in America, our responsibility cannot end with saying, “Thank you for your service.” A truly military-friendly city must also help service members, veterans, and their families build meaningful lives after the uniform.

That means welcoming them into neighborhoods, businesses, schools, faith communities, nonprofit organizations, and positions of civic leadership. It means creating opportunities for veterans and civilians to serve together. It means recognizing that reintegration is not something military families should have to accomplish alone.

Jacksonville welcomed me when I needed a place to rebuild. It gave me the opportunity to find love for myself, deepen my love for my family, and discover a new way to love and serve my community.

Warrior to Love® is my way of giving that love back.

This is my hometown. This is our community. Together, we can make Jacksonville a city that does more than honor military service—a city that truly knows how to welcome its people home.

Thank you for your service. Welcome home. You still belong here.
